Peter Steinhauer: Vietnam - A 30 Year Retrospective

Hanoi Studio và Vietnam Society hân hạnh giới thiệu triển lãm ảnh Peter Steinhauer: Việt Nam - Hành Trình 30 Năm Nghệ Thuật, trưng bày các tác phẩm nhiếp ảnh của nghệ sĩ từng đoạt nhiều giải thưởng quốc tế - Peter Steinhauer.

Triển lãm được tổ chức nhân dịp kỷ niệm 30 năm bình thường hóa quan hệ ngoại giao giữa Việt Nam và Hoa Kỳ, giới thiệu những bộ tác phẩm tiêu biểu của Steinhauer như: Vietnam: Portraits and Landscapes, Ha Long Bay, Hanoi Streets, Roofs and Houses, Mekong Delta, Saigon Canals, Ethnic Minorities, Nhà Tập Thể, Cathedrals of the Red River Delta và Central Markets.

Những bức ảnh của Steinhauer về Việt Nam mang vẻ đẹp sâu sắc, thể hiện trình độ kỹ thuật, nghệ thuật và sự tinh tế hiếm có. Ẩn sau vẻ đẹp ấy là sự đối thoại sâu sắc với lịch sử chính trị và văn hóa phức tạp giữa quê hương Hoa Kỳ của nhiếp ảnh gia và đất nước mà ông coi như quê hương thứ hai - Việt Nam.

Đối với nhiều người Mỹ, dù đã hơn nửa thế kỷ trôi qua kể từ sau chiến tranh Việt Nam - Hoa Kỳ, Việt Nam vẫn gợi nhớ đến hình ảnh của xung đột và mất mát. Các tác phẩm của Steinhauer vượt lên trên góc nhìn cũ kỹ ấy, sử dụng ánh sáng, hình khối và sự tôn kính để kiến tạo một câu chuyện thị giác mới, một câu chuyện tôn vinh vẻ đẹp và tính nhân văn của con người Việt Nam. Ảnh của ông tránh né những hình ảnh bi thương từng thống trị trong cách nhìn của phương Tây, thay vào đó mở ra một tầm nhìn về sự kết nối, lòng cảm thông và sự tái sinh.

Thông qua nghệ thuật của mình, Steinhauer nuôi dưỡng hòa bình, lòng thấu cảm và sự hàn gắn, xây dựng những nhịp cầu hướng đến hòa giải giữa Việt Nam và Hoa Kỳ. Toàn bộ sự nghiệp của ông là một lời tri ân sâu sắc dành cho sự thấu hiểu và chữa lành sau chiến tranh.

Trong khuôn khổ triển lãm, sẽ diễn ra buổi trò chuyện nghệ sĩ (Artist Talk) và ký tặng sách cho ấn phẩm mới của ông mang tên SPIRES: Cathedrals of the Red River Delta.  Trong buổi trò chuyện, Steinhauer sẽ chia sẻ về nguồn cảm hứng sáng tác, nỗ lực nắm bắt trái tim và tâm hồn của con người Việt Nam, về nghị lực, khả năng sinh tồn và sáng tạo của họ. Ông sẽ nói về cách mà nghệ thuật kế thừa quá khứ, nuôi dưỡng niềm hy vọng cho tương lai, và đóng vai trò quan trọng trong quá trình hàn gắn và hòa giải. Ông cũng sẽ giới thiệu ấn phẩm mới nhất SPIRES: Cathedrals of the Red River Delta, ghi lại hình ảnh tuyệt đẹp của những nhà thờ được xây dựng trong thời kỳ Pháp thuộc, thể hiện sự hòa quyện tinh tế giữa kiến trúc Pháp và mỹ cảm Việt Nam.

Về Peter Steinhauer - ông là nhiếp ảnh gia và tác giả của bốn tuyển tập ảnh nghệ thuật, đã sống và làm việc tại Việt Nam suốt 30 năm kể từ năm 1993. Ông tiếp nối di sản của cha mình, một bác sĩ quân y Hoa Kỳ, người đã tiếp tục sứ mệnh chữa lành sau chiến tranh bằng việc đồng sáng lập một tổ chức y tế phi lợi nhuận hỗ trợ các bệnh viện và bác sĩ Việt Nam. Sứ mệnh của Steinhauer là tôn vinh vẻ đẹp thiên nhiên, văn hóa và con người Việt Nam, vượt ra khỏi khuôn khổ của chiến tranh.

Tác phẩm đầu tay Vietnam: Portraits and Landscapes (Edition Stemmle, Zurich, 2002) được nối tiếp bởi Enduring Spirit of Vietnam (được Photo District News bình chọn là “Sách Nhiếp Ảnh Hay Nhất Năm 2007”), Cocoons (Powerhouse Books, 2019), và ấn phẩm mới nhất SPIRES: Cathedrals of the Red River Delta (tháng 10 năm 2025). Các tác phẩm của Steinhauer hiện có trong bộ sưu tập của Bảo tàng Nghệ thuật Carnegie, Bảo tàng Di sản Hồng Kông, cùng nhiều bộ sưu tập tư nhân và doanh nghiệp trên toàn thế giới. Hanoi Studio and Vietnam Society are pleased to present Peter Steinhauer: Vietnam - A 30 Year Retrospective, a photographic exhibition by award-winning artist photographer Peter Steinhauer.

The exhibition marks the 30th anniversary of the normalization of U.S.–Vietnam diplomatic relations and features selections from Steinhauer’s major bodies of work: Vietnam: Portraits and Landscapes, Ha Long Bay, Hanoi Streets, Roofs and Houses, Mekong Delta, Saigon Canals, Ethnic Minorities, Nhà Tập Thể, Cathedrals of the Red River Delta, and Central Markets.

Steinhauer’s photographs of Vietnam are intensely beautiful, displaying a level of impeccable skill, artistry, and sensitivity. Yet beneath their grace lies an engagement with the complex political and cultural history between the photographer’s American homeland and his adopted country of Vietnam.

For many Americans, even five decades after the U.S.-Vietnam War, Vietnam continues to evoke memories of conflict. Steinhauer’s work transcends this outdated lens, using light, form, and reverence to present a new visual narrative, one rooted in the beauty and humanity of Vietnam. His photographs resist the tragic imagery that has long defined Western representations of Vietnam, offering instead a vision of connection, empathy, and renewal.

Through his art, Steinhauer fosters peace, empathy, and healing, building pathways toward reconciliation between Vietnam and the United States. His body of work stands as a profound dedication to understanding and healing after war.

As part of the exhibition, an Artist Talk and Book Signing will be held for Steinhauer’s new book, SPIRES: Cathedrals of the Red River Delta.

In his talk, Steinhauer will explore the inspiration behind his work, capturing the heart and soul of the Vietnamese people, their resilience, survival, and creativity. He will share reflections on how art inherits the past while fostering hope for the future, and how it plays a transformative role in healing and reconciliation. He will also discuss his latest publication, SPIRES: Cathedrals of the Red River Delta, which exquisitely captures churches built during the French colonial period and the blending of French architectural styles with Vietnamese design sensibilities.

About Peter Steinhauer:

Peter Steinhauer is an artist photographer and author of four monographs who lived and worked in Vietnam for 30 years beginning in 1993. Steinhauer is a torch bearer for his father’s legacy as a U.S. military doctor who continued his mission of healing people after the war by co-founding a non-profit health organization to support Vietnamese hospitals and doctors.  Steinhauer’s mission has been to portray Vietnam’s natural beauty, culture, and people beyond the context of war.

His first monograph, Vietnam: Portraits and Landscapes (Edition Stemmle, Zurich, 2002), was followed by Enduring Spirit of Vietnam (awarded Best Photography Book of the Year 2007 by Photo District News), Cocoons (Powerhouse Books, 2019), and his latest, SPIRES: Cathedrals of the Red River Delta, (October 2025).  Steinhauer’s work is held in the collections of the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, and numerous private and corporate collections worldwide.
